The project

CEREBRIS is a European Innovation Council Pathfinder project working to advance AI-powered stroke care and neurological disease management, with a primary focus on stroke diagnosis, monitoring, treatment planning and recovery.
‍
Led by the University of Bath, the project brings together a multidisciplinary European consortium with expertise in neurotechnology, artificial intelligence, clinical research, imaging, rehabilitation, biomedical engineering and innovation.

CEREBRIS focuses on developing a secure, federated and explainable AI ecosystem for stroke care. Its long-term ambition is to support the full stroke-care pathway, from earlier diagnosis to recovery and rehabilitation.

The challenge

Neurological conditions affect millions of people across Europe and place a major burden on patients and families, clinicians and healthcare systems.
‍
Stroke is one of the most urgent and complex examples. Around 1.1 million strokes occur in Europe each year, and stroke remains a leading cause of death and adult disability in the EU. During an untreated stroke, around 1.9 million brain cells can be lost every minute, highlighting the importance of fast diagnosis and timely care.

Each stroke affects people differently, and recovery can depend on many factors, including brain injury, movement, sensation, clinical history and access to rehabilitation. However, important patient information is often collected across separate systems, devices and assessments. CEREBRIS aims to connect these data sources and transform them into meaningful insights for more precise diagnosis, monitoring, treatment planning and recovery.
